FAQ

Shelf life and consumption

Chilled products : The “best before” date is on every package. It is displayed in a regulated format including the year, month, and day.
Unrefrigerated products (sold on the shelf) : The package is stamped with an ink jet code indicating the date before which the product should be consumed to get the maximum benefit from its qualities. For example, 20140313 means March 13, 2014.

In order for you to fully enjoy the taste, it is preferable to use the product within 10 days after opening the container, and to store it in the refrigerator.

After the “best before” date, a product that has not been opened poses no health risk. If stored according to directions, only the organoleptic qualites (taste, colour) may be altered.

Our small single-serve packs (200 mL, 300 mL) can be frozen. They should however be well shaken before drinking.

After the product has been left at room temperature for 6 hours, it is not recommended for consumption.

Ingredients, Nutritional Information, Allergens

Omega-3 fish oil is the only such ingredient that we use in our products, and the fish oil is encased in porcine-derived gelatin.

Juices are naturally rich in certain minerals. We always choose the best fruits and vegetables in order to proudly say that they are naturally high in certain elements. For example, because oranges are naturally high in potassium, the more orange juice a juice contains, the higher its potassium content.

Vitamin C is naturally present in fruit. The amount varies from one fruit to another, which is why the values in the Nutrition Facts table vary depending on the flavours.

Vitamin C added: Where regulations permit, we can add vitamin C. It is included in the list of ingredients and “Vitamin C added” appears on the front of the package.

Under current legislation, manufacturers are exempt from specifying the natural flavours used in the product in the list of ingredients

Give that each flavour is different, they may or may not contain alcohol. Ethyl alcohol may be present at very low levels in the finished product due to the fermentation of corn starch used.

From a chemical standpoint, natural flavours and artificial flavours contain roughly the same molecules. The difference is in the method of preparation and the source of ingredients used to prepare the flavouring.

For example, natural strawberry flavouring is a strawberry extract, whereas artificial strawberry flavouring is chemically synthesized based on molecules found in the natural flavour. Artificial flavouring is an imitation of the natural flavour.

The two sweeteners used in the production of our products are stevia and sucralose. Stevia is a safe, natural sweetener that has no calories. The leaves of the stevia plant are infused like tea leaves to extract the stevia. Because it has no calories, its glycemic index is 0, and therefore it is attractive to people with diabetes. Sucralose is an artificial sweetener derived from sucrose and used in the production of low-calorie beverages.

This means that we can use either apples, pears, or grapes, alone or combined, depending on our supplies or their availability on the market.

Our packaging complies with the various regulations in force on labelling and food advertising.
For a juice: It is not necessary for all the fruits/vegetables on the list of ingredients to be depicted on the packaging. We show the ones that are most characteristic of the product’s flavour. On the front of our packaging, there is also the mention that the product is a blend of several juices.

For a drink or cocktail: The image evokes the flavour of the product, but the fruit(s) or vegetable(s) shown are not necessarily present on the list of ingredients. In this case, the mention of natural or artificial flavours is on the front of the packaging.

In general, our products do not contain GMOs. However, if the list of ingredients includes the words “sugar/glucose-fructose” or “corn starch,” the ingredients may have been produced from or in contact with GMO corn.

Natural food colouring is made from natural sources. It is usually prepared from plant matter including vegetables (beets, carrots), fruits (grapes and elderberries), and roots (turmeric).

Artificial food colouring is obtained synthetically, and the amount added must comply with Health Canada guidelines.

The water used in production comes from various municipal sources where our plants are located. At the plant entrance, the water is filtered through activated charcoal to remove all traces of residual chlorine. At the same time, this operation enables us to obtain perfectly flavourless water (odourless, colourless, and tasteless).

No. Because most of our products undergo heat treatment (pasteurization), preservatives are not necessary. For this reason, we advise consumers to preferably use the product within 10 days after opening the container and, once open, to store it in the refrigerator.

We are not required to give the percentage of fruit juice or vegetable juice on our packaging. However, the guide to the Labelling Act requires all fruits and vegetables in the recipe to be listed in the list of ingredients in descending order of proportion by weight.

Special washing and rinsing measures are applied after packaging a product containing allergenic ingredients so as to remove all traces from the production line.

In addition, suppliers are required to provide a letter of guarantee about the presence/absence of allergens in the ingredients. Our company has a very strict policy in this regard.

Sulfites are preservatives used in the production of grape concentrates. Subsequent to a new Health Canada guideline implemented in August 2012, we must now declare the sulfites present in our products, even if they are present in very small quantities. The level of residual sulfites in the grape concentrates we use is so low that the sulfites are not considered to be allergens. To be considered an allergen, the sulfites must be present at levels of 10 ppm or more, which is not the case for our products.

All our products are gluten free except the Oasis Apple-Berry Yogurt-Cereal Smoothie (made with milk, oats, wheat, and barley). Please note that all allergenic ingredients are printed in bold on the packaging.

Juice from concentrate/not from concentrate: Concentrated fruit juice is juice from which water has been removed by concentration to make it more readily transportable. This juice is then reconstituted at the plant by reintegrating water in accordance with strict standards. When the juice is not from concentrate, it has been obtained immediately after pressing the fruit; hence there has been no addition of water.

Drinks and cocktails: Usually composed of water, sugar (glucose-fructose), artificial flavour, and food colouring. Lassonde drinks and cocktails contain added fruit juice to enhance flavour.

They come from a sugar blend made of corn (corn syrup) and cane sugar.

Fruits contain natural sugars. For this reason the quantities of sugar and carbohydrates are listed in the Nutrition Facts table on our packaging. The term “Natural fruit sugars” is moreover written under the Nutrition Facts table.

Packaging, process, origin

We buy almost 90% of processing apples from eastern Canada. Because there are not enough juice apples produced in Canada to meet the demand, we buy concentrates from North America, South America, Africa, and Asia.

This juice not from concentrate (fresh pressed) comes mainly from Brazil. The juice itself is brought to our facilities from the production facilities by tank trucks. It is then sent directly to the packaging lines to be pasteurized and packaged. The freshness and flavour of the fruit are thus preserved.

A rigorous selection process is performed on every continent in the world to find the fruit ingredients to be used in the production of our juices, drinks, and cocktails. Our buyers and auditors regularly visit our suppliers to ensure compliance with international standards of quality, safety, food safety, ethics, and environmental practices.

All our packaging is recyclable. The recycling logo and the following mention are found on each package: Recyclable/Refund where applicable.

Giving refunds for packaging is a provincial responsibility. As such, the legislation varies from one province to another. However, we ensure compliance with the various regulations and also ensure, where required, the monitoring and registration of our products.

Our food quality and food safety standards are among the most rigorous in the world. Our food quality and food safety control and assurance programs have proven themselves. All our facilities are HACCP and FSSC 22000 certified, certification that is recognized as the most reliable.

This statement tells us that the product was manufactured in our Canadian facilities. The product is manufactured from Canadian and imported ingredients.
